GraphIt! User Instructions

The user interacts with the graphing tool via a set of buttons located on the left side of the applet.  The buttons are grouped as:

A brief description of the functionality of each button is provided below.

Selection tool. When this tool is selected (i.e., the button is depressed), clicking on an element in the graph will  select it.  The selected state is indicated by "handles" (circles) attached to the element.  You can click and drag the handles to edit  the element, or use the action tools or the color selection box to further modify it. 
 
 
Line drawing tool. When this tool is selected, you can draw a straight line in the color currently selected in the color selection box.  Click once in the graph area to start the line, and click a second time to end it.
 
 
Curve drawing tool. When this tool is selected, you can draw a vertical parabola segment in the color currently selected in the color selection box.  Click in the graph area to define the apex, and click a second time to define the second (last) point on the segment.
 
 
Curve drawing tool. When this tool is selected, you can draw a parabola segment in the color currently selected in the color selection box.  Click in the graph area three times to define three points of the parabola segment.
 
Rectangle drawing tool.  When this tool is selected, you can draw a solid rectangle  in the color currently selected in the color selection box.  Click in the graph area to define the lower left corner, and click a second time to define the upper right corner.
 
Text drawing tool.  When this tool is selected, you can insert text in the color currently selected in the color selection box.  Click in the graph area to define the insertion point (lower right).  Type the text in the field that appears on the left, under the color selection box.
 
Arrow drawing tool.  Similar to the line drawing tool, but with an arrowhead at the end point.
 
Tracer drawing tool. When this tool is selected, click on a point on the graph to draw two line segments originating from this point and normal to the axes. The lines are drawn in the color currently selected in the color selection box.  
 
 
Translation type selection tool. If this button is depressed, the selected  curve can be moved without retaining the original curve. If the companion button is depressed, a translation of the curve will retain a copy of the curve at  the original location.  
 
 
Translation tool (one of four). Depressing this button will move the currently selected curve north.  (Companion buttons will move the curve east, south, and west).
 
Erase tool.  Deletes the currently selected line or curve.
 
Erase all tool.  Deletes all objects from the graph.
 
45-degree line tool.  Press this button to draw a line with a unit slope.  Press it again to remove the line.
 
Customize graph button.  Click to pop up a dialog box allowing you to customize the graph scales and labels.
 
Print button.  Click to bring up a new browser window containing a printable image of the graph.
